Ecology Institute announces request for proposals

The Ecology Institute has established a modest funding program to strengthen basic and applied ecological research and to foster new collaborations across the Penn State community. Submission deadline is June 1, 2015.

Submission criteria

Appropriate activities for funding include (but are not limited to):

  • Development of new research teams and position them for substantial external funding success.

  • Planning and hosting a themed workshop or symposium.

  • Strengthening an existing research center.

  • Initial exploratory activities to help define the scope and strategic role of new collaborative research centers.

  • Promotion or outreach activities to raise the visibility of ecology-related research at Penn State.

The call is open to all Penn State faculty, postdocs and grad students, and not only those affiliated with the Ecology Intercollege Graduate Degree Program. We are especially interested in supporting postdoc led initiatives.

The aim is to add value and create new opportunities, so the call is not intended to support existing research activities (e.g. not to supplement materials and supplies for an ongoing project), nor is it intended as a travel grant for conferences.

Proposals could range from $500 to $8,000, with scope for renewal after 12 months subject to appropriate justification.

Submission instructions

All proposals must be submitted electronically via this webform no later than 5:00 pm on 1 June 2015.

Each proposal will comprise a 1-page project description and an appendix.

The project description should include sections on the Rationale and Relevance, Activities, Outputs & Outcomes, Budget and budget justification.

The appendix should include brief resumes for the PI and all co-PI’s and a list of all collaborators (where appropriate).

Proposals will be reviewed by the Ecology Institute steering committee, with results announced by July 1.
