I work on the Oak Regeneration Study in Pennsylavnia (ORSPA), an ongoing long-term monitoring program established with the help of the Pennsylvania Department of Natural Resoruces. Study sites were established at over 20 mature oak-dominated forests throughout PA and are monitored as harvest and succession occur. Some sites are approaching 20+ years of regeneration.
Our lab's work has both practical and ecological import. Current data will be used to update models of oak regeneration, which form guidlines land managers use to invest time and energy in forest products and services. Further, research provides insight into the interactions that cause forest communities to shift over time, where multiple future forest types are possible for a given oak forest.
